Messenger changes when updated

Is there any way to correct when an update changes the
version of messenger I have? Without the Exchange
messenger installed, my users continue to lose their
connections when the automatic update updates their system
(XP Pro). I then have to go back and install the Exchange
version for them to use the internal messaging system.
Has anyone heard of this and if so, how do I correct it?
