You might try reading the following:

http://www.sandisk.com/pdf/oem/AppNoteCFHostv1.0.pdf

This helps with optimizing CF for host operation. Also, if you are using
EWF, make sure the CF is not marked
"removable" Here is an article on that:

Hum, I run RAM EWF and I do FBA on the CF - My development CF and I have
used it for a year without any problems. It's not marked as fixed either.
