A couple of complex questions:

1. DVD to computer ... this is basically a DVD-ripping
question. You can find a ton of information about this at
VCDhelp.com -- this site is huge, so look for the
tutorial and how-to areas in the left-navigation menu.

2. VHS to computer ... there are several methods to do
this: VHS-DV Camcorder-Firewire-Computer, VHS-analogue
capture card. If you just want to capture video for
placing on a DVD, you might want to check out one of the
Ulead or Dazzle USB products. (however, the mpeg video
most of them create is hard to edit within Moviemaker)

Maybe part of this process will help you:

2600 - The Hacker Quarterly - Spring 2003 - Page 24 - Ripping movies from
DVD to CD-R (2 page guide)

1 - Use SmartRipper to get the data from a VCD compatible DVD to your hard
drive. Need 7 to 9 Gigs free.

2 - Use DVDx to convert the DVD files to MPEG1

3 - Burn VCDs using the MPEG1 files
