I have two hard drives. "C" drive is my main drive that has XP Pro installed
and I boot from that. "D" drive has my old Win 98 installed and keep that for certain reasons. When I would try to run a program that is install in "D" it would run with no problem. Now for some reason when I click on the icon to run the program or go into my computer to run the program I get an error message that it can't find d:\games\game.exe or what ever the file name is. But I'm actually clicking on that file but it can't find it. Any idea why this is happening? Like I said it did work then all of a sudden it stopped working. |

You can run them directly from their folders. Other programs refer to files located in other folders and to registry entries during their operation. Those references are most likely to locations on "C:" from when the Win98 installation was the only operating system. When you run into one of these programs that will not launch, how are you running them? From WinXP? Or booting to Win98 and then running them? If from XP, try running them from Win98. If the program uses relative paths as references instead of exact paths, it may cooperate. If booting to Win98, does the method that you're using to do that hide the new C: drive so that the old drive is seen by Win98 and its installed programs as C: instead of D:? This problem is one of the reasons a boot manager is recommended for adding an old Win98 setup to a system that has XP has its main operating system. Using the boot manager, the new C: can be hidden which allows the second operating system to think that its still in the C: position. For the Win98 programs that will not run, you can try reinstalling while you are working from within Win98. Doing so *should* update needed paths and registry entries. -- Sharon F MS-MVP ~ Windows Shell/User In memory of our dear friend, MVP Alex Nichol |
