What happens when you try to do so, any error messages?

I too cannot get generic drives to show in the drive tree
in My Computer. I noticed this when I tried to download vacation pix off my Sony Cybershot DSC-70 digital still camera. Always worked before. Now when I plug in the camera to download, the icon to safely remove the device appears in the tray, everything is happy in hardware profiles (this device is working, no conflicts, no red x's or any of that stuff), Sony DSC shows in the USB list, no conflicts, everything AOK. Just no F: (generic, removable) drive in the tree with the other drives as before. No error messages, just nothing happens in the tree. I have found by right clicking on My Computer and selecting "Manage" and then selecting "Drive Manager" from that tree, I can get my removable, generic (Sony camera) volume to appear and allow itself to be opened. A few more keystrokes, but seems to work just fine. Still, baffled by the sudden change. The only thing I can think of is SP2 downloaded another driver for the Sony camera when I upgraded last week. Or a switch was set during installation? I did notice I had to re-enter some stuff in Outlook to send e-mail again after the SP2 upgrade. Could this be something like that? The switch thing occurred to me because of others who haven't upgraded to SP2 have the same problem periodically. I noticed before SP2 that the order in which I connected the camera to the USB port, powering it up, and opening Windows Explorer, made a difference in if the volume would appear in the drive tree. Maybe it didn't change the driver at all. However, since the environment
changed with the installation of SP2, perhaps you need a new driver. Have you checked the Sony site for updated software and/or contacted them with regard to compatibility with SP2. -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ "Me2" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:17c601c49520$ffca5a00$3a01280a@phx.gbl... >I too cannot get generic drives to show in the drive tree > in My Computer. SOLVED IT! For MY situation anyway, it did turn out to be
a "switch-like" scenerio. I eliminated the USB driver scenario as my Sidewinder joystick with USB connector operated normally. I eliminated a bad cable because I could still get to my DSC folders through Disk Management. I then went into my Tweak UI (It's saved my bacon a time or two.) and clicked on the My Computer tab and then Drives. The list of all possible drive names are listed and the ones appearing in My Computer are checked. The F: drive (generic volume) was unchecked (because my camera was not connected when I updated to SP2 perhaps?). I checked the box, closed TUI and there was my camera, accessable in the drive tree in My Computer once again. I Even plugged it in to the USB port with Windows explorer closed and it opened up the DSC folders. >-----Original Message----- >Maybe it didn't change the driver at all.
