Default WindowsXP Home Ed. refuses to load DirextX9.0

I have tried to install Directx9.02a and b but I get a message saying that it has not been tested for compatibility with XP and will not be loaded. I don't get the usual option to install anyway.

Any ideas?

Have you tweaked any Services, Ian. At least one web site and a magazine
article recommended shutting down certain items to increase the performance
of Windows XP without telling users the penalty for doing so. Check in
Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services to make sure Cryptographic
Services is enabled and running.
