Default USB-2 Flash not recognized

On my older computer running Win XP Pro when I connect a
USB flash drive (San Disk or Soyo) the drive flashes on
and off but there is no recognition from the system of
the device. Tried all installation option. The drives
work on other systems and this system works with an
Apacer USB Flash drive. The fact that the newer drives
are USB-2 may be the common thread but I see no reason
for such a problem since it should be back-compatible.
Has anyone else had this problem and found a cure.

Not every manufacturer follow the USB2 full standard, which is supposed to
include USB 1.1 compatibility.

Do you know of examples that do work? I can't return these
things once the package is open.

The business about USB 1.1 might be the key. From what
I've read elsewhere, older systems are USB 1.0, not 1.1.
And therefore the USB 2.0 key will not work. The store
suggested installing a USB 2.0 PCI card. That seems to
make sense. I will try it and post the result.

Default You are so right

I installed a USB 2 card and the thing now works. So the
the San Disk Cruzer is not back-compatible. The old USB
card was 1.1.

Default final word - not 1.1 problem

Turns out my USB card was a 2.0 - but it uses the VIA vt-
6202 chip set. I replaced it with a generic USB 2.0
generic chip set card and it works. So there is an issue
with the chip set. Whew. The new card cost $20. Small
price to pay.
