XP Pro SP1 stops usb mass storage device working

after installing a 6in1 card reader/combined usb hub
installed and working flawlessly with win xp's own
drivers then after installing sp1 pc boots very very
slowely then usb mass storage device fails with error
code 10 after uninstalling device then allowing computer
to rescan and reinstall after another 10mins or so the 4
flash drives appear in win explorer but on accessing any
computer hangs and have to use task manager to end task

usb hub still continue to work fine tho!
