wont read CD on CD-R or CD-RW drive

Initially on boot up I can read CD disks normally. After
the initial read i get the following error message.

"Windows cannot read from this disk ..." Does not make
any sense. Reboot disk reads fine. XP home edition" Not
sure exactly when it started malfunctioning. I belive I
have sp1 installed?
