Default Wandering Mouse

Ordinary old (non USB) mouse has decided to wander around
the screen at will and gets lost. Total pain. Using XP
Pro. Any ideas / fixes / thoughts?

If you have a microphone attached to your PC, set it to Mute.

Have you tried attaching a USB mouse to the system and see if it repros
similar behaviour?
USB mice rock and you just plug them into a Windows XP box and drivers are
installed in seconds and they just work. In most cases you dont even need
3rd party drivers.
