Default XP laptop keyboard problems?

I have a gateway laptop with XP.
I installed a MS Wireless Excutive Destop keyboard and mouse.
Now the laptop keyboard is hosed. Key configuration is off , letter keys
give numbers or the wrong letter.
Wireless keyboard works fine.

I did a system restore to before the keyboard install and laptop keyboard
now works.

Any ideas how to make this work. I wanted to be able to use the wireless at
home but still need the laptop keyboard to work when on the road.

Thanks,

see if the numlock key was on or pressed. on most laptops, the "numpad" is
overlayed over normal keys, giving this type of behavior if pressed.
