Default CD Rom drive MP3 Ripper access problems

I can see my CD roms - CDRW and DVDRW - in WinXP.
I can run DVDs, VCD, access data etc.
CD writing programs work fine too.
But any programs that 'rip' music or video do not list the
devices at all. So it appears some form of raw access is
messed up? I vaguely remember reading something about
some registry area that causes that?

(1) what 'rip' programs are you trying to use?
(2) do your drive(s) support DAE (digital audio
extraction)?
(3) are you running xp pro or xp home and do you have full
authority on the system?
