how can i make windows xp recognize a good old isa lan
card?

There no such thing. Get a PCI NIC, for 5-10 $US.

Yes there are. I have one. However, few are being sold because the newer
motherboards no longer have ISA slots. I would not be surprised if XP fails
to recognize such an old device.

Most add-in cards need to supply their own drivers. I do not believe that
your old ISA LAN card would have any XP drivers. As mentioned before, you
might as well replace it.
