I have just installed a secondary HD in my machine; WinXP
finds it great, installs it, but will not assign a drive letter to it. It is in device manager, and seems to be working fine according to Windows. I have attempted to manually assign a drive letter via disk management, but it will not allow me to do anything other than delete the partition. Please help. |

Hi Steve,
What happens if you go into Disk Management and delete and then recreate the partition? Does it allow you to create the new partition and format it properly? If so, then there is no reason I can see why it will not allow you to assign a drive letter to it. -- Tim Newton [MSFT] timothyn@online.microsoft.com Search our Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/directory Visit the Windows 2000 Homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp See the Windows NT Homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/ NOTE: Please reply to the newsgroup and not directly to me. Hi, Steve.
As you probably know, "drive" letters are not assigned to entire physical drives. We must create a primary partition and assign a "drive" letter to that. Or create an extended partition and then create at least one logical drive within that; the extended partition will not receive a "drive" letter, but each logical drive will get a letter. Each primary partition and each logical drive is a "volume"; each is assigned a "drive" letter and can then be formatted. With Disk Management, you can create one or more partitions and logical drives on the physical drive, assign drive letters to them, and then format them. RC -- R. C.
