Sorry for the long post but I've got a hardware problem I
just can't track down. here's what happened: I have an LG 4040b multi burner that wasn't burning anything so I did a firmware update (301). I recvd confirmation that the update was completed successfully so I rebooted. After that I still couldn't burn but I was able to install a program ok. I finally traced the burn issue to incompatable media. During this time I also installed Roxio ez cd 5 and that's where my problems started. I couldn't find my drive in device manager or my comp but I know tht Roxio needs some patches to work with xp so I did another download. After I installed the patch I still couldn't see my dvd drive. Screw that so I uninstalled roxio and deleted the patch but i still have a problem. When I go into device manager I can see the drive but in properties I get the message " windows has loaded the drivers for this device but can't find the device. error code 42" . As usual the windows help center was no help at all so I gotta fix this one on my own so here's what I did: 1) I uninstalled the device and rebooted. Windows found the device(name and model number too) but I still got the same error 2) I got into the comp and inspected the ide configuration (I had to get in there when I did the firmware too) pulled out the cables and reseated them. 3) I swapped the IDE's out thus eliminating the possibility that I had a faulty cable 4) I tried another dvd drive on the existing secondary channel and got the same error 5) checked the jumpers and was able to get the error with jumpers on csel or master At this point I'm thinking either Roxio left some droppings in system32, I have an issue with the second IDE channel or maybe esd . The NForce board has an nvidia IDE controller which I haven't tried to uninstall yet but I'm not sure that will solve anything as there are no errors in device mgr for the ide channels. I might also try a system restore too. This one really has me stumped so I'm wondering if anyone has any input on this. Dylan |

Have you tried setting the burner as slave?
on the secondary ide? And what is the jumper set at on the burner now? Master or slave? And what else is on the same ide channel as the burner? Anything at all? Or just the burner? And is it on auto in the bios? Does the bios recognise the burner? On bootup, does it bring up the burner on Secondary ide, as master or slave? And whats on the primary ide besides the hdd?
