Default HI-SPEED USB

Dear Sony, Western Digital, and Microsoft

I recently purchased a Western Digital external hard drive that is a FireWire/USB 2.0 combo drive (model # WD1200B007-RNN) to use on my Sony notebook (model PCG-GRZ530) running Microsoft XP home edition with service pack 1a.

The problem is that I keep getting the following error message “HI-SPEED USB device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB Hub.â€

No big deal – so I go out to Sony’s knowledge base and I’m told to go to Microsoft update to update the driver. I run the update but it finds no new drivers. So I search Microsoft’s knowledge base and find what I think will be the solution (see links below) and after following the instruction I am led right back to the update area for a recursive loop experience – very unpleasant!

How can I get my new hard drive to work at its fullest capacity? Please help!!

Default HI-SPEED USB

(by the way, this is a peer to peer newsgroup, it's not
guaranteed that actual Microsoft employees will see this.)

According to Sony's web site, the PCG-GRZ530 comes with
only USB 1.1 ports. This means your notebook does not
have the hardware needed to support USB 2.0, no matter
what drivers you load.

Nevertheless the drive should work well in low speed (USB 1.1) mode.

While what you say is true why can't he purchase a "USB2 PC Card" to access
USB2? I use a Belkin FSU222. With that card he can load and use USB2
drivers when the device is plugged into the card.

Works for me (Toshiba Satellite)
