I was trying to install windows xp on my comp, which is 2
years old, 700mhrz 256 megs ram, and my hard drive is completely formatted... i try to load the bios off the boot cd of windows professional, but it gives me a general protection fault (trap 0000000D) I cannot figure this out at all, i have tried sys c:, fixboot, fixmbr, everything! I just cant install anything! i have tried to install xp home AND professional, nothing works, so something bad mustve happened to my comp? any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks |

Open your BIOS and set the CDROM as the 1st boot device and
the hard drive as the second. Put your XP CD in the drive and reboot, the CD will boot and give you a message, asking if you want to boot the CD? Say yes. You will be given the options to install, do it...you will be able to partition, format and do a clean install or an upgrade. See MS instructions http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;316941 "dave" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1366401c3c1c8$ca801f00$a601280a@phx.gbl... | I was trying to install windows xp on my comp, which is 2 | years old, 700mhrz 256 megs ram, and my hard drive is | completely formatted... | i try to load the bios off the boot cd of windows | professional, but it gives me a general protection fault | (trap 0000000D) I cannot figure this out at all, i have | tried sys c:, fixboot, fixmbr, everything! ive tried all of that, but the problem is that the cd
wont boot up! once i get to the "press any key to boot cd" prompt, i press a key, then it gives me the general protection fault screen... ive tried loading the setup from xp boot diskettes too, but still no luck... i think this problem is even more serious than i thought before! thanks for the help tho! if anyone has any more ideas, they will be very much appreciated! cheers >-----Original Message----- >Open your BIOS and set the CDROM as the 1st boot device and >the hard drive as the second. >Put your XP CD in the drive and reboot, the CD will boot and >give you a message, asking if you want to boot the CD? Reinstall your previous operating system, then when at that systems desktop,
place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." The report it generates may give a clue as to what is going on. -- Michael Solomon MS-MVP Windows Shell/User Backup is a PC User's Best Friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:023901c3c1d8$e915e9d0$a301280a@phx.gbl... > ive tried all of that, but the problem is that the cd > wont boot up! once i get to the "press any key to boot > cd" prompt, i press a key, then it gives me the general > protection fault screen... ive tried loading the setup > from xp boot diskettes too, but still no luck... i think > this problem is even more serious than i thought before! > > thanks for the help tho! > if anyone has any more ideas, they will be very much > appreciated! > cheers > >-----Original Message----- > >Open your BIOS and set the CDROM as the 1st boot device > and > >the hard drive as the second. > >Put your XP CD in the drive and reboot, the CD will boot > and > >give you a message, asking if you want to boot the CD? > Say > >yes. > >You will be given the options to install, do it...you > will > >be able to partition, format and do a clean install or an > >upgrade. > > > >See MS instructions > >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- > us;316941 > > > > > >"dave" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in > >message news:1366401c3c1c8$ca801f00$a601280a@phx.gbl... > >| I was trying to install windows xp on my comp, which > is 2 > >| years old, 700mhrz 256 megs ram, and my hard drive is > >| completely formatted... > >| i try to load the bios off the boot cd of windows > >| professional, but it gives me a general protection > fault > >| (trap 0000000D) I cannot figure this out at all, i > have > >| tried sys c:, fixboot, fixmbr, everything!
