"Delayed Write Failed" Error Message When You Manage Files in Windows
XP I am looking for someone (MICROSOFT?) to correct this issue. Here is the information that I have available to demonstrate that this problem mainly appears to be related to Windows XP and Large Hard Drives. There is so much different affected hardware (on XP) that it is difficult to find a real lowest common denominator. So far I have not found anyone claiming to have this issue on Windows 2000. I'm not saying that someone doesn't have the issue, I just have not found a link on the Web saying so. That does show that at least XP is one common denominator. There appear to be more people with a ATI cards complaining of this issue then there are with other video cards. That would tend to indicate that ATI video cards "may" be at least partially another common denominator. Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives appear to be mentioned more then any others but I would guess that this issue effects all new large EIDE/ATA drives that require 48Bit addressing to use. I am unable to find the KB on Maxtor's site but I've included the URLs from Western Digital that at least acknowledge the issue. So far though it appears that NO ONE (Promise, Western Digital, Maxtor, Microsoft, etc) has done much about it. The KB articles suggest a few things, but most of the suggestions are futile for everyone. So far I have not found anything that CONCLUSIVELY fixes the problem for EVERYONE involved. I have not modified the Program memory settings in the Advanced tab, they are as set by the XP installation. On my system I get event viwer errors and system freezes. Disk Management says the WD1200 is Healthy (but at risk) There are physical clunking sounds at random times from the Hard Drive/s When system was running Windows 2000 and only WD1200 and WD800 there was no such issue with Delayed Write Failed If I unplug the new WD250 and plug in my old WD800 with Windows 2000 and use the built-in IDE ports on the Motherboard there are no Delay Write issues and the occassional clunking sound goes away too. Once I plug the new WD2500 back into the Promise Ultra100 TX2 the issue comes back. Any help resolving this problem would be most appreciated. The test application from bustrace indicates that my problem is that Windows is sending packets too large for the IDE bus to handle. Here are my details: When attempting to use my ByteCC www.byteccusa.com ME-350U2F external drive case with an IEEE 1394 (Firewire) connection I get the following error when I try to copy files to it: delayed write failed File copies failed with files from 76KB to 460MB. It appears to work correctly with the USB connection but it is only USB 1.1 so it is terribly slow. Machine specifications: Windows 2000 SP4 running on IBM Thinkpad A31P Laptop with built in IEEE 1394 and USB 1.1 ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 built in graphics card Eject unplug device lists: "Prolific PL3507 Combo Device (1394 ATAPI_Rev 1.00) IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device" The ByteCC ME-350U2F is an external drive case with both Firewire and USB 2.0 connections. It uses a chipset from Prolific http://www.prolific.com.tw http://tech.prolific.com.tw . I have not been able to locate a utility that can change the settings for the Prolific chipset as exists for the Oxford chipset (Oxford Firmware Updater also has a Modify device configuration settings screen). Disk was formatted using win98 startup disk on a different machine, directly connected to internal IDE. Used fdisk to create a primary DOS partition as whole drive. Formatted as a single FAT32 drive (needs to be shared with Win98). Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 Using 1394test.exe from http://www.bustrace.com/products/delayedwrite.htm the test failed with: Write failed with 0000045Dh The folks at bustrace tell me that 0x0000045Dh is "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I just noticed something interesting, I have 2 laptops. The firewire
enclosure works on one and fails on the other. Although they both list the same driver version used for the Prolific controller 5.0.2183.1 the version of the file providing the driver under the "Driver Details" is actually different. (c:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys File Version: 5.00.2195.5419 works, File Version: 5.00.2195.6655 fails) Works on Sony PCG-XG9 laptop Windows 2000 SP3 Driver for Prolific is (under driver file details): c:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys Provider: Microsoft Corporation File Version: 5.00.2195.5419 IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers Sony CXD3222 OHCI i.Link(IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller Does not work on IBM Thinkpad Windows 2000 SP4 Driver for Prolific is (under driver file details): c:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\disk.sys Provider: Microsoft Corporation File Version: 5.00.2195.6655 IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller Looking in the registry the "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" seems to be HardwareID PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0552&SUBSYS_05111014&REV_00 PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0552&SUBSYS_05111014 PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0552&CC_0C0010 PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0552&CC_0C00 I believe that VEN_1180 is "Ricoh Co Ltd" and DEV_0552 is "R5C552 IEEE 1394 Controller" http://www.ricoh.co.jp/LSI/english/...52/5c552-e.html This is a PCI bus to PC Card and IEEE 1394 OHCI bridge that supports 2 PC Card slots and 2 Firewire ports.
