NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)

I have got a problem that i can't figure out how to solve, i hope someone
can help.

I have an Asus p4c800-e motherboard which have a ide controller on the
southbridge, and an onboard promise 378 controller, im running XP with all
bios up 2 date and all service packs installed.

on the southbridge controller i have attached my boot drive, plus 2 cdrom
drives, and this works fine.

on the promise 378 i have attached 4x120gb drives in one giant raid 0 this
also works fine.

i then installed in pci slot 2 my sx4000 controller on which 4x250 gb drives
are attached, but no array defined.

i booted into xp, and with the pam utility created a huge raid 5 array
consisting of all 4 disks, i made a full initialisation of the array, and
when it was finally done i could use the drive, all was good until i had to
reboot. then i got an error from the ntldr that said:

ntldr-couldn't open drive ntldr multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)

NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partion(1)



i then detached the sx4000 array, and made a boot.ini with various boot
options in case that the sx4000 array had moved around in the controller
order or something, but xp never shows me the boot options it just keeps
giving me the above error.

i tried booting into DOS, and fdisk is able to see the bootdrive and the 378
array, and the sx4000 array no problem there, but neither win2000 or XP will
boot, how come and what do i do to solve the problem ?

I have tried the following:

*disable either the 378 or sx4000 controller and it boots fine

*remove the array from the sx4000 controller and it boots fine, and xp
recognizes the controller correctly

*i have tried pci slot 2,4, and 5 no change (cant fit into pci1 or 3)

xp assings irq 22 and 23 to the two controllers, there is no conflicts in
the device manager when i initially had it all running, and XP loads the
correct drivers, unfortunatly im am unable to assign IRQ directly from the
bios.

trying to boot on th xp-pro cd just reboots the machine, booting on
windows2000 pro gives this :

Disk i/o error : status = 00000100

ntdetect failed
