Default USB - Data is Invalid - not the normal issue here

I have a home built PC that recently went through a spate
of issues that required a XP Repair to be run from the XP
Home Installation CD.

Following that, the USB drivers were not loaded. When I
attempt to load them, I get an <img
src='http://stoutfamily.us/error1.jpg'>"Data is
Invalid"</a> message.

I located a description of this on the net and it says to
go into the registry and change the security settings for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI.

This does not work. It is something beyond that, but I
have been unable to locate anything.

Can anyone help?

Additional information below, if needed.

**** History ****

on October 17

Noticed there were new updates to download.

Downloaded them (one big one, one media player update)

Requested Reboot.

I'd been meaning to uninstall and re-install a pesky
piece of software. Stupidly decided to uninstall,
then OK'd reboot.

got error saying ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt.

Googled for solution, followed directions to start
WinXP cd, go to recover and expand a new copy of file
to C:\windows\system32

Did that

Booted

Get fatal error blue screen c000021a

Don't know if caused by new update, or by combination
of uninstalling software right after update loaded,
but before reboot

Followed Repair XP directions at
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
and it worked, except USB ports.

**** Attempts to get USB working ****

When I look at the USB entries in the Devicer Manager,
it says No Drive rInstalled. I click "Reinstall
Drivers" and ultimately get an error message

I googled and found this :
http://www.usbman.com/oldforum/foru...sages/1836.html

I did as they say in the the registy, but the errors
persist.

I have deleted the registry entries and let it find
the new hardware, same errors.
