Default IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

Why does XP's Device manager have 'cdrom drives' and
'Ide Ata/atapi controllers'? Aren't they both for the
same thing? And why are they seperate?

No they are not the same thing, a CD drive is a CD drive, the controller is what you connect CD and hard drives to.
