No sound from mic recording

I have installed three different sound cards and still have
the same problem. I cannot record with mic. The mic
checked out ok at Radio Shack. I also tried a different mic
and it was the same thing. I have the mic unmuted on the
volume control and all the volume controls on max. I have
winXPhome and Phillips Sonic Edge card. CD's play ok. Can
someone help get me recording

If you have the sound icon on the System Tray, double click it. If not go
to Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control.

When the Master Volume control appears, click on Options menu then click on
Properties. Click on the Recording radio button (Playback has the dot in
it. Put the dot in Recording. Playback is the default and will always
appear when starting the Master Volume control)

Make sure that Microphone has a check mark next to it then click OK.

Place a check mark in Microphone by clicking on the white box below the
slider. Make sure the slider is moved up in the box.

Try to record with the microphone again. (Make sure the speaker volume is
turned down as you may get feedback if this is not done.)

If this doesn't fix your problem, sorry that I can't help any more.
