No com ports?

I'm dealing with a Toshiba Satellite 1105 with a factory installation of XP Home on the first partition. Its internal modem is a Toshiba Software Modem AMR. In XP, Control Panel > System shows no COM ports (just LPT1), and yet the modem seems to be installed and working fine.

I only care because I am trying to install Win98se on another partition and some weird things are happening, most important of which is that Win98 does not detect any new modems at all. It does, however, show a "PCI card" (no more description than that) under Unknown Devices. I have obtained Win98se drivers (from more than one source) for the Toshiba Software Modem AMR; results of trying to update the driver for this PCI card have varied from crashes to apparently successful installation of the drivers leaving the modem still undetected by Windows. When I follow the troubleshooting instructions suggested by Windows 98, I find that indeed no COM ports are detected, either by it or DOS.

Another possibly relevant fact: Upon first installing Win98, Windows had not found a driver for the PCI System Management Bus. I had to run an Intel utility that re-detects and installs all of the system devices.

A COM port is a (usually DB-9 serial ) connector and very
few laptops have those anymore, but the IRQ exists and it
does connect to the RJ-15 telephone port connector.

Because laptops do not use standard off-the-shelf
motherboards and other hardware, drivers are often custom
written for just that model. You may not be able to get
drivers to run W98 on a machine designed to run XP.

I seem to recall that MS suggests that a dual boot with W98
and XP has W98 installed first, then XP will detect the
other operating system and set up the dual boot. I don't
think W98 has that much built-in.

Why do you even want to run W98?
