I am setting up a network between two computers that are not connected to
the internet. I have been advised that I will have to use an AdHoc connection and am trying to find info about that. I also need to find a way for the two computers to be able to send messages to each other, as in Windows Messenger or something similar. Is there some tool in windows that will do this? Don Dunlap |

Here is a page that you will find useful re. setting up the network..
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/..._02april08.mspx and for messaging across a network.. http://www.messagepal.com/?s=G&k=BB -- Mike Hall MVP - Windows Shell/user http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Don Dunlap" <dondunlapwhoami@direcway.com> wrote in message news:6bf7d$420d63af$452347ba$22764@allthenewsgroups.com... >I am setting up a network between two computers that are not connected to >the internet. As for the messaging, you can use "net send" in XP. Look up "net send" in XP's Help & Support. This requires that the Messenger service be running and SP2 disables it. Make sure you enable it. Here is some info on wireless adhoc networking.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/..._02april08.mspx Also, for local network messaging you can either use Netmeeting or winchat. To run Netmeeting click on start and go to run. Type in conf and hit enter.Follow the wizard. Once done, you can click on Call/New call. Type in the ip address of the other machine to make the call.(Both machines need to be running Netmeeting). Also, to run winchat, click on start and go to run. Type in mschat and hit enter. Then choose Conversation/Dial. Type in the ipaddress of the other machine. (This also has to be running on the other machine) "Don Dunlap" wrote: > I am setting up a network between two computers that are not connected to > the internet. Thanks Mike,
I will look into both sites. Initially, it looks as if the messagepay will do the job cheaply. Can Messenger be used without internet connection? Don |

Ron,
Mike Hall also recommend that site for adhoc networking. I will use it as my basis. I will also look into Netmeeting or winchat. I haven't gotten too deeply into it yet, but am wondering if there will be a static ip address on the two computers if I don't have internet connection. I need to do a little more research. The first computer is in place in the office and the second has been ordered. I have a week or so to familiarize myself with the necessary info. The two computers will be primarily use file and printer sharing. As I mentioned, there will be no internet connection, at least for now, so I don't think that Messenger will work. Am I mistaken? Hi Don,
If you are going wireless and will be performing Adhoc the ip address should be static. It should look something like this : 169.254.xxx.xxx. Even if this does become an issue you should be able to contact the other computer by "Computer Name". To find out the computer name for a specific computer click Start and right click My Computer. Choose Properties. Go to the Computer Name tab. Look to see what the "Full Computer Name" is. Here is some more info on Adhoc Networking. Configuring Windows XP IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks for the Home and Small Business http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...n/wifisoho.mspx Wireless LAN Card settings for AdHoc communication http://www.practicallynetworked.com...adhoc_setup.htm "Don Dunlap" wrote: > Ron, > > Mike Hall also recommend that site for adhoc networking. It is not an instant messaging client and therefore doesn't need the Internet. If you are going to set up a wireless network, then the information that Ron Rector gave you is a good place to start.
