PS/2 keyboard and mouse frozen

have a Dimension 8100. There was a wireless PS/2
trackball and keyboard attached, but I changed to a
wireless wheel mouse and keyboard. (all logitech) The
wheel would not function while in Internet Explorer, so I
downloaded and installed the new logitech driver. During
the driver install the system flashed two messages... one
said the system was rebooting (didn´t ask, just did it)
and the other I saw as the screen left was, driver
installation failed. After the system rebooted, the mouse
and keyboard would not function.

The system runs XP with the SP1 patch. I tried to hook up
a USB mouse, but it doesn´t work either. The mouse and
keyboard work prior to XP loading, but once the system
goes to the welcome screen there is no response. I booted
the system in safe mode, but the same problem is
encountered.

I read the BIOS may need to be updated, but I´m not sure
how to accomplish that with no way to communicate to the
system. I have connected a standard PS/2 mouse and
keyboard to the system as well, but they do not work
either... I am running out of ideas... Please send some
more!!

hey um ya i have exactly the same problem but i dont know what caused it. A USB mouse works but a USB keyboard doesnt. the original touchpad mouse and keyboard dont work either. They work up until the welcome screen and dont respond. I had only one password protected program so i got into my system by clearing my password using a boot program and booting with a cd. I can use everything with my mouse but i cant use a keyboard. Its really annoying. I've looked at device manager but i get error code 39 - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. I've tried disabling, uninstallin, enabling. nothing works. I've scanned for viruses but that didnt help either. I think the driver files got corrupted somehow. How would i fix them? Maybe something in registry edit i have no idea. thanks for your help and good to know someone else has same problem not just me.

When ever any Windows device stops working, remove it from Device Manager
and reboot your Windows. Upon next boot, Windows should re-detect it and
fix the file.

However, if the keyboard is still not working, you should try:

1) Changing the keyboard with another one that your know is working (borrow
from a friend)

2) Try a USB keyboard.

3) Check the BIOS.

Ya i've tried all three already and by the way its a lap top.
