Default editing DVD's

I have many "family" VHS tapes that I have copied to DVD's using a Sony DVDR.
The DVD file type is a .VOB At this point I would like to edit some of these
DVD's that I have made by taking out short clips and saving them to my
computer--when I get enough clips I would then burn them to an empty DVD
disc. Windows Movie Maker will not support VOB files so I can't use it to
edit my DVD's. Anyone have any ideas what software would allow me to edit VOB
files???

First...just try renaming the file to VIDEO_TS.MPG
and see if it will import. If the import works...drag
the file to the timeline and Save/Publish it in the
..wmv or .avi format. Then...reimport the new movie
clip for editing purposes.

If that fails...rename the file back to Video_TS.VOB
and try converting the file to .wmv or .avi using the
following free converter:

SUPER © Simplified
Universal Player Encoder & Renderer
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
(the mirror download site is faster)

(FWIW...it's always a good practice to create a
System Restore point before installing new software)

After installing SUPER...open the program and
drag/drop your .VOB file into the Active field.

Output Container...choose...wmv.

Left click the Encode button.

Choose: Simple Profile / OK...

Wait...

(FWIW..I have better luck with video if I do not
try to multi-task while a file is being converted)

When the file is converted...you should find it in...
Program Files / eRightSoft / Super / OutPut.

Or...you can type...Ctrl+T...to open the Save
Window and choose a save folder.

Good luck...

When I "explore" the DVD that I am working with, I first will see a folder
that is labeled "VIDEO_TS" when I open that folder I see the following list
of files: VIDEO_TS.BUP( 12KB) VIDEO_TS.IFO(12KB) VIDEO_TS.VOB(30KB)
VTS_01_0.BUP(82KB) VTS_01_0.IFO(82KB) VTS_01_1.VOB(1,048,544KB)
VTS_01_2.VOB(607,568KB) I changed the VOB to MPG on the VTS_01_1.VOB file
and the VTS_01_2.VOB file. I tried to import both files into WMM and I was
told that the VTS_01_2 file was empty. The VTS_01_1 imported ok but when I
tried to drag the file to the timeline it would only drag to the
"audio/music" time line. Also the video screen in WMM was black and when I
tried to "play" it I was only able to hear the sound of the video--no picture
at all.

I will try your next suggestion later (too many things to do today!). Then I
will report on that situation.

While I have your attention I have another question about WMM. I have a
backup PC that I want to install WMM on. I am a bit confused though. I read
somewhere that there is a WMM2 available, but I have not been able to find
it. The WMM that I have on my main PC is Versin 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3) then below that it says: WMM
Version 2.1.4026.0
What's what and which one should I put on the other PC--should I leave the
one that I listed above on my main PC???

Ok...this means you will need to convert the
..VOB files to a compatible format. My suggestion
of .wmv might be worth a try.

BTW...The "VOB" files with the largest file size
are the ones that will contain your video.

OK...good luck.

=================================
OK...you have Movie Maker 2.1 which is
the latest version for Windows XP.

If your 'backup PC' is running Win XP...
Movie Maker 2.1 is probably already installed..
it was included in WinXP SP2.

If you cannot find Movie Maker on your
'backup PC' go to...Start / Run...and type...
moviemk.exe
then press enter. If movie Maker is installed...
it will launch.

I recommend you use this software :E.M. Total Video Converter.
It’s a piece of extremely powerful and full-featured converter
software that supports almost all video and audio formats. The
software is designed to convert video for your mobile video player as
3gp, mp4, PSP, PS3, iPod, iPhone etc and also VCD or DVD player,

John--Thanks for your help--the Super converter seems to be working
okay--although I have some NEW questions now that I have tried it today.

If I may; After I converted from a VOB to a WMV and I did my editiing that I
wanted to do and then played back the saved clips, I noticed that the picture
size that was showing was smaller than the original. When I made it bigger (I
had to go to 200% to make it about the same size as the original) I noticed
that the picture quality decreased somewhat. Is that normal or is there a
setting that I can use in SUPER to change that situation???

As you can see on the SUPER interface there
are many options. In the 'Video Scale' section...
is 'No Change' ticked?

Yes...picture quality can suffer when converting
from one format to another. Best results is usually
achieved by experimenting.

Maybe the following article will be useful:
