Default XP installation glitch

Hi,

I just installed windows XP on a brand new 160 GB HD and all seemed to go
well except for one little glitch. I got an error message that said the
following: "The Application or dll C:\Windows\System32\MSBVM60.dll is not a
valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."
My only choice was to click OK, and after doing so the installation of
Windows XP continued.

I did use Western digital software to format this 160 GB drive before
installing Windows XP. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or
not. I tried to install Windows updates with a CD supplied from Microsoft
but I get this message and it won't let me continue running the update CD.
All else seems to be working fine. Can anyone shed some light on what
exactly this is? And how to resolve it?

Thanks for any advice!

~ Doug

Hi Doug,

From another Doug:

XP comes with the MSVBVM60.DLL installed by default. This DLL handles the
basic functions of VB applications, but you may need the full runtime
library in order to run some programs.

Hi Kelly,

I scrapped the idea of using the security update CD sent from Microsoft and
went directly to the Windows Update site. Installed all of the critical
updates and some of the recommended updates, along with a couple of updated
drivers. This time everything went without a hitch. Don't know why there
would be a difference but it worked flawlessly. Hopefully whatever was
causing the error is fixed, it would seem so:-) Thanks for your reply and
BTW, great web site!

Good you got it going, but for future reference avoid device driver
updates from M$, they tend to be out of date and can cause problems for
smoe configurations. Get updated drivers (only when you NEED them to fix
a problem) from the devices manufacturers instead.

Most welcome, Doug....glad to hear you have it sorted. But hmm, could you
give me more information on the CD you were using? Any and all information
written on the CD would be great.

Sure thing Kelly. Microsoft sends out a free "Microsoft Windows Security
Update CD" for the asking. The one I have has all the updates dated to
February 2004. This one has a part number: 0104 Part No. X10-29587

System Requirements for this CD: Windows XP, ME, 2000 Professional, 98 SE,
or 98, with a CD-ROM drive.

Microsoft also includes a CD with a trial version of some antivirus and
firewall from Computer Associates.

Oh BTW, here's where to get the CD. It says here it contains updates to
October of 2003, but it's actually February 2004.
