Default Help - I can't open up the Data files stored on my external hard d

My old PC (which had windows XP) was about to crash - a lot of applications
didn't work anymore...I managed to save my music, photos etc on an external
harddrive using easy file transfer.
I know have a new PC which has windows vista - I thought I get easy transfer
to upload my data...but it goes a little bit then says no files were found,
nothing was extracted? I downloaded a copy of the data to the new computer
anbd called it my old files (as I had read on a blog that this might
help)....but so far I can't get anything to extract! Please help
