How do I get a user name and password to check my yahoo mail via the
microsoft server on my laptop?

First of all, you check yahoo mail through the Yahoo server, NOT the
"Microsoft" server.
Secondly, unless you have either a paid-for yahoo.com account, or a yahoo.uk
and (I think) a yahoo.fr email address, you can't without the assistance of
a third party application called Ypops...

Unless you have a premium (paid) Yahoo account, you
are better off using webmail on a laptop.

YPOPS has been mentioned here frequently, but I tend to shy away
from recommending it because
a) it takes a certain amount of tech savvy to set up, and
b) it is contrary to Yahoo's TOS, so they can terminate your account
if they find out you are using it.
