A while ago I bought an acer laptop with a legal windows vista edition
(dutch). "Almost" no problems untill yesterday: when I tried to install winrar, the message "winrar.exe does not work properly" appeard (I don't knwow if this is correctly translated from my Dutch version). First I thougt it it had something to do with winrar, but today I discovered I couldn't install any software from the internet. How can I solve this problem? |

Personally, I would try a system restore to before the problem developed.
If that solves the problem, you can decide whether you want to reverse it and try to determine what changed. If if doesn't work, post back. What are you using to download, IE etc. Do your programs on CD's still install. How are you trying to install the downloads?
Directly from the NET, or first saving to your Desktop, then trying to install? If saving right-click on setup.exe>Run as ADMIN. Or, if they are not compatible right-click on setup.exe>Properties>Compatibility Tab> Install in XP SP2 mode. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "AFP" wrote: > A while ago I bought an acer laptop with a legal windows vista edition > (dutch). Thank you for the reply;
System restore does not solve the problem. I have already tried to save the setup before installing, but the problem remains. I have also tried to change a few settings of my firewall, including to shut it down entirely, but this also has no effect. So far, I have no idea what could have caused the problem... I have seen this problem posted a half dozen times and the methods tried,
include changing to Firefox and using various download managers. So far, those changes were reported to have worked for a few downloads, but the problem seems to return. I, personally, have not seen anyone report a permanent solution. I had one download the file on another computer and run it on the problem computer, and at least for that one time they reported that that method worked. If you could try downloading from a computer with a different ISP, a different operating system, or various combination, maybe we could isolate the problem more clearly. The OP stopped posting after getting a successful install from another source. Thank you very much your response; I was surprised to find out it actually
worked to save the setup at another computer on a memory stick and run the setup from the memory stick on my computer. At least I now can install programms from the internet on my computer. But the fact remains this is not the way it should work. I still wonder what causes this problem. It's not windows defender, not the windows firewall and not my virus scanner (AVG), I already tried to shut them down completely. Windows Vista now tells me I have to wait for an update to solve this problem.
