Default Left side tool bar

How do I add a tool bar the left side?

I can create a desk top folder and drag it to the left side to create the
tool bar but the folder stays on my desk top. When I delete it the items in
the new toolbar are gone.

How can I hide the folder or delete it from view and still have the left
side toolbar? Or is there a much better way?

Thanks in advance.
