Default Windows.old folder

I have finally managed to get rid of everything from my hard drives, and have
almost have a clean machine from which i am now running Windows Vista Home
Basic.

However, after completing the reinstallation, all of my old data, which i am
happy to get rid of is contained in a folder called Windows.old (in C ,
this is obviously taking up a lot of my hard drive space. I would normally
simply press shift+delete to try and get rid of this, but scared this might
mess things up. should i be doing this in a more proper way?

Thanks

as long as there is nothing you need in the folder, it may be safely deleted

The disk cleanup feature is also useful for removing an unused hibernation
file!
