Hi Ben,

can you get more precise on what the message is you're seeing?

Default Windows Explorer closing

Now I have another question...

My wife is having a problem with her Windows Explorer Closing.

Usually she will be moving folder contents, from one folder to another when
the message occurs, and windows explore closes.

It is frustrating to her, and I can't seem to get a clue as to why it happens,
or how to fix it.

Suggestions welcome!

Hi Axel,

She says its so fast she can't get it all, but bascially it is:

Windows Explorer has to close...

Followed by Windows Explorer is opening.

Or words close to that..

Bill, to be honest, this error message doesn't sound too good. Am I right with my assumption that both of you are not too much of computer experts? I got this impression from what you've been writing. In that case I'd suggest you just re-install Vista and everything will be fine again.

The only problem I see is that you apparently can't copy your personal files from the Documents folder to your D: drive (I hope you have one).

Please let me know if this solution would be feasible for you and if you have your documents saved to a save location (= any other drive than C. In that case just insert the Vista DVD and re-install your system. Please make sure you have your other software CDs at hand to re-install them as well.

If you don't have saved your files to a safe location, just drop me a note to the newsgroup to give you some hints about two options for saving them ( 1 = starting Vista in Safe Mode, 2 = copying files using the Command Prompt).

OK, I see.. So when it happens, does it happen to the same files that you are able to copy at some other time? Or does this error only occur when you're copying/moving a particular set of files? So what I'm about is: Is this error reproducible or is it completely random?

Axel,

I do pretty well on XP systems, and have progressed up from DOS thru all the
windows systems... Vista is new to me, and to my wife.

I should have said this is an intermittent problem, not occurring all of the
time.

should also have said that her system has SP-1 installed, but the problem also
occurred before SP-1 was installed.

Most of the folders she works with contain embroidery design, but can't really
see any significance to that.

Regards,

Ben

Sometimes, after the error has occured, she can go back and repeat the actions
and there will be no problems.

Sometimes it will happaen when a folder is opend just for looking.

Other times it will happen when files are being moved from one folder to
another.

Yes, it does appear to be random or intermittant.

What is the specific fault information for this crash according to the
Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel?
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
will help you look that up if you don't know how.

Ben, in that case I'm afraid to stick with my original suggestion.

Hunting down intermittent errors that can't be nailed down to a specific cause is almost impossible. So I still suggest to just re-install Vista. It's just one or two hours of work and you're clean. Anything else will take longer and, thus, will become a waste of your time.

I'm sorry to not be able to give you any other clue.

If it's a crash, you could usually hunt those down pretty effectively using
the Windows Debugging SDK or other power tool. A brief inspection of the
Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel's logs can often be
illuminative too - 3rd party modules identified as the Faulting Module there
are usually a really obvious smoking gun. =)
