Default problems with ICS and a VPN

At the risk of boring you let me explain the computer set up XP Pro SP2
throughout.
I have a regular PC that has an analogue dial up internet connection to an
ISP. Connected to this PC is a laptop and a LAN connection is made via
ethernet cat 5 crossover cable. An MS home network is functioning perfectly
between the two computers. The main PC has one way (down) satellite link.
The satellite connection software creates an asymetrical VPN (WAN Miniport
L2TP) connection to the service provider server, i.e internet requests are
sent up to the VPN server but the data comes down from the satellite. One
makes a dial up internet connection then start the satellite connection
manager and all is well ON THE MAIN PC.
MS ICS is in operation and the VPN connection is the shared connection and
this appears on the Laptop if you look at network connection

If you now go to the Laptop and run Internet explorer most of the time it
reports back that the page cannot be displayed but sometimes it connects to
the Web sites OK then packs up again for no reason. The same is true if e
mails are sent/received sometimes it works or not. There is no definite set
of circumstances that cause failure or success. By monitoring the data in and
out of the main PC I am fairly certain that the request for web page delivery
is being sent out via the VPN. In other words the operation is totally
intermittent when using the Laptop over the LAN.

Has onyone out there got any ideas where I might start to look for the
problem.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like routing issue. Posting the results of both computers ipconfig
/all here may help.

Hi Robert---Well I found the problem after much head scratching. I decided
to use another ISP and all was OK. I tried several other ISP's as well and
thay all worked except my default one!!!.
So I guess it has something to do with proxy servers at the ISP rejecting
info from my client somputer. The supplier of the software did say that not
all ISP,s would work but why the main PC always worked I do not know.
Anyway, thanks for your reply and I am glad to report that all is now well
even though I do not know exactly what is wrong with my ISP setup.
Regards to all
