Default checking free memory

what is the the best way of checking free memory on your computer system - thinking here of storage (what used to be called Rom) not operating memory

You can check the amount of disk space (which is what I think you mean?) by opening up "My Computer", rightclicking on a drive (normally, just the C drive would be the main one) and then click properties. It should then show you a pie chart with the amount of free space left
