Default Virtual Network Software

I've been looking at Virtual Network Software like Packet Tracer & Boson NetSim7.
Has anyone had any experience with any of these types of software?
I have seen threads on other forums, but not really about them in detail.
What you can do when running them etc.

My requirement is to run a virtual network at the fraction of the cost of buying routers/switches, cables & a couple of pc's/laptops to run it on. Hands on experience will come later on possibly when doing a networking course or by using a test network that a friend runs.

I have tried packet tracer for a short period a few years ago but it does have it’s limitations on what you can do with it & i probably did not use it to it's full operational capacity.
