Slow file access after removing junction point

hi,
running Vista Ultimate 64bit.

I created a junction point which mapped to my User folder on external hard
drive. Then removed this junction point and pointed it back to the default
C:\Users\... location but ever since the file system is terrible slow even on
basic operations such as rename file. So it's NOT a slow copy/move file
issue, just that all basic file functions are terrible slow. It doesn't
matter if it's in my Users folder or elsewhere. As you can imagine this is
making my Vista installation completely useless as software such as Visual
Studio is hanging on basic operations.

I've done everything I can think of - defragging, turning off
Search/Indexing service... still the same.

I had turned off Sys-Restore before creating junction so there is no such
back in time point.

BTW I've noticed the lagging is only for Explorer.exe process, if I for
example do a rename from Command prompt it's done instantly.

been without antivirus/security suites for many years (and never had a virus)

it's just Windows firewall.

nope! I've had a PC for 20 years and never had a virus (even scanned my
computer every now and then with online virus apps which confirm this). I
simply play safe. I consider my self an experienced computer user but this
slow file access problem is beyond my knowledge.

I'm telling you, my setup has no malware or virus, it's one thing i'm 100%
sure of! Also this problem started immediately after removing the junction
point.
