Hi All,
I think I have an issue with The Startup Repair tool (RE) [1]. The problem is I cannot get beyond this tool, or it's desire to scan and reboot the system. I have gone through this cycle about 6 times now. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with a recevery partition (D . Iinstalled SP1 two days ago. Since then the computer has been rebooted about 5 times. On the 6th, all hell broke loose. I don't believe any changes have been made since then. Naively, I want to question how RE does not know how to work with Vista SP1. Perhaps RE is on the D: partition and was not updated? I've transcibed the log below. Any ideas? Jeff Jeffrey Walton [1] http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo...c9b9bf1033.mspx == Startup Repair == Number of Repair Attempts: 1 = Tests = Check for Updates Error Code = 0x0 = System Disk Test = Error Code = 0x0 = Disk Failure Diagnostic = Error Code = 0x0 = Disk Metadata Test = Error Code = 0x0 = Target OS Test = Error Code = 0x0 = Volume Content Check = Error Code = 0x0 == Root Cause == The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair. |

have you tried tapping F8 at startup, and going into Safe mode?
Then: start>Programs>Accessories>System tools>System restore to a earlier date before SP1. If that does not work, contact DELL. -- Mick Murphy - Qld - Australia "Jeffrey Walton" wrote: > Hi All, > > I think I have an issue with The Startup Repair tool (RE) [1]. Jeff
Is the startup repair running, automatically each time you start the computer? There are some checks missing in the list you posted. Boot status test Internal state test Event log diagnosis System boot log diagnosis Boot manager diagnosis I don't have an OEM installed system to test this. Each OEM vendor has the ability to set up the recovery options any way they wish. You might want to check with Dell for any known issues with the recovery environment. Let us know what you find. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience "Jeffrey Walton" <noloader@gmail.com> wrote in message news:601006d6-b720-46f6-9738-77116cf5fcd3@m44g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... > Hi All, > > I think I have an issue with The Startup Repair tool (RE) [1]. Hi Ronnie,
Thanks for the reply. > Is the startup repair running, automatically each > time you start the computer? Yes. > There are some checks missing in the list you posted. Unfortunately that is all that is displayed. Obviously, I had to transcribe it by hand. > I don't have an OEM installed system to test this. Lucky you .> You might want to check with Dell for any known issues with > the recovery environment. A restore from CD sounds better than an over seas call center... The bad thing is that the computer is about 5 days old (arrived on Friday 3/21). My mother does not understand why all the problems (neither do I for that matter). I would expect Microsoft/Dell to have fewer problems than a home built with a retail version of the OS. Cause is given as "...The operating system version is incompatible with
Startup Repair...." Microsoft now provides free SP1 support at: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/d...74&gprid=500921 "Jeffrey Walton" <noloader@gmail.com> wrote in message news:ec36ad36-5fed-4405-b1e3-bc23e865825d@p25g2000hsf.googlegroups.com...
