This problem may be caused by your antivirus program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most versions of Norton
and McAfee antivirus programs. Those must be uninstalled, not
just disabled. After uninstalling the antivirus, try Windows Mail again.
Then, download and install a more compatible antivirus such as:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

I have NAV installed, and it (windows vista mail) runs just fine.

With most of the Norton antivirus programs, Windows Mail
often runs just fine for months before the problems appear.

Lucky you.
I've known people who swore by Norton for years and then suddenly had
problems that were cured by removing Norton completely.
