I'd be extremely surprised if any recovery software recovered anything from
a jbod set, when it sees only individual disks

Why would you be extremely surprised? There is no striping involved, and
the data is concatenated together. Look at the diagram:

In fact, from reading more about it, he can probably recover *all* of the
data.
