trial and opening word doc in email attachment

I am lost. I'm a mac user who just bought a pc notebook.

I downloaded office trial 2007 so that I could open an email attachment on
my earthlink account. I have the MS word in the trial, but can't open the
attachment.

It's urgent. Microsoft says they can't support me on the phone and
earthlink says call Microsoft. Oh, and Gateway says call Microsoft.

so, I'm turning to you guys.
