Default Shutdown on Vista laptop

Hi,
I have Vista Home premium installed on a Dell laptop. I have set the power
options to shutdown the computer when the power switch is pressed. This does
work when I physically press the power switch. But when I go to the start orb
and click the red shutdown button the computer goes into sleep mode.

Any ideas on how I get the computer to shut down when the red shutdown
button is clicked?

Thanks

You have to either hold the power button 5 seconds for a hard shutdown or
pick shutdown/turn off from the menu
Vista doesn't like to shutdown because it takes so long to start, so they
try everything they can to get you to sleep or hibernate instead of powering
off.
They don't like to admit it, but that is what I see.

I know the red shutdown works as a shutdown button on my Vista ultimate
desktop computer. I am sure there must be a setting somewhere to chamge its
operation.

Right click on the battery icon on the task bar and select Power Options,
then select Change Plan Settings for the option that is currently selected.
Then select Change Advanced Power Settings, then in the new window select
Power Buttons And Lid, then Start Menu Power Button and select the action
that you require when the button is clicked.

Control Panel -> Power Options -> click the 'Change Plan Settings' link for
your chosen power plan, then 'Change Advanced Power Settings'

In the Advanced settings dialog, expand the 'Power buttons and lid' section.
You can then change the actions listed under 'Start menu power button'

Hi,

Click Start and type: Power in the Start Menu search box
Select Power Options
Click on the Power Plan currently in use
Go to Change Plan Settings and then to Advanced Power Settings
Click the "+" sign next to Power buttons and lids
Do the same next to Start menu and power buttons, select the shutdown option
