Sorry about cross-post (comp.ibm.pc.hardware), very quiet.
Win xp I have a spare 20gig IDE laptop HD from a working XP laptop. I wish to prepare it for use in a USB enclosure, then simply use for storing/transfering data via USB 2.0. When I place this drive in my 2.5 inch enclosure it is not recognised when plugged into my XP desktop? I have a similar drive (ex ebay), which works fine in the same enclosure...with no OS installed. TIA Terry |

Some of them seem to only work with FAT 32 formatted drives. Luck; Ken |

Thanks Ken
I am unsure how the HD that works ok in the enclosure is formatted, as it was like that from ebay. I just got the enclosure & usb cable, put that 2.5" drive into it, plugged into desktop pc and works as another drive with no OS showing anywhere!.......... I use it just for storing files from my PC's. I suspect the "other" spare drive may have to be formatted etc.(having XP on it from my laptop). With the XP drive in the enclosure, and plugged in, what you see in "Disk Management?" |

I use it just for storing files from my PC's. Next time you plug it in; select it in "My Computer" then right click on it and click on "Properties". It should show "File system:" with NTFS or FAT32 listed. > I suspect the "other" spare drive may have to be formatted etc.(having XP > on it from my laptop). > > Terry > If you are running a non NTFS operating system on a system (Win95 98 w/o SP2) then the drive needs to be formatted as FAT32 to be readable in all your systems. If all your systems can use NTFS then you should use that, as it lets you use larger files. Luck; Ken |

The "spare" drive does not show up anywhere, but when in the enclosure the single light(red) is ON. There may be a block of four pins, separate from the 44 pin IDE section. Some USB adapter chips, like the connected drive to be "master". That may be mentioned in the assembly instructions that come with the enclosure. Paul |

How do I check jumper settings & where please...I see no facility for settings on these drives. They have no pins covered. |

No instructions with enclose but I will surf to try and find any. Terry |
