RPC server unavailable when trying to download pics from canon s40

FRickin Vista. Now what? Im trying to download images to my vista
laptop using the camera cable since the compact flash card wont fit into
the laptop. installled zoombrowser. the images on the camera show up
in the canon software but when i click download i get the "rpc server is
unavailable". WTF?

I found the answer, an arcane and crazy procedure IMO to get the dang
camera to download its pictures. The typical user would be totally
screwed. Thank you jerk-ass MS and Canon for the lack of instructions
on this issue.
