I think I should explain why my crunching output was so low over this week.
My main PC (the one with the most output) updated itself using Windows Update, then as usual kept insisting I restarted it to complete the procedure. Upon doing so it went through the normal booting up, loading XP screens etc., but then just before the desktop appears the machine blue screened and instantly restarted itself (the blue screen only being there for a split second). I had nothing on there that had not been backed up so I went for a reformat/reinstall XP. After formatting the hard drive, then going through the first setup section of XP, the machine restarts (normal). Upon restarting, instead of getting the nice graphical installation screen I got some error message about a crucial windows file being missing. Bemused, I checked - I had formatted the hard drive, so what was going on? Dodgy XP disc with read errors? Unlikely, I'd used this disc on many PCs and always successfully. Only one HDD in the machine at this time (the other one disconnected). I tried format/installing again. Same message. I gave up and went to bed. On Tuesday 13 November I was involved in a traffic collision and had to venture all the way home to Essex from Bath (uni) to sort out car. ![]() I could not live with leaving the one remaining computer on during my time away, so the trickle of output I've been getting was old tasks being validated. Plus I had to wait till I got back to sort this damn PC out. I still do not know what is wrong. I swapped the HDD out for a spare I had at home in Essex - with XP installed on it (it came out of this PC originally) and am operating from that now. Shame I was too busy with Uni work to sort it out before today, but now it's back up and running. As to the XP install problem, I'm now suspecting the HDD... ![]() Quote:
That didn't happen... ![]() Good luck to Ian with the server move - hope all goes well. Well done to anyone who bothered to read it all, I thought I'd explain why...

That really is a tale of woe EPF
I hope you are OK after the accident, and the car isn't too badly damaged Regarding your PC woes, I never use the automatic Windows Update option for that reason - I would just select the 'notify but don't download' option, and then update at a time which suits you so you can keep an eye on it. Regarding the hard drive - try doing a full format of it on another machine, then put it back in and try installing XP again.

I'm OK, the crash was only at ~10mph, but the car - HERE and HERE - is not too good.

For anyone who is interested, it turned out to be a dodgy stick of RAM. The machine would not boot again so I started swapping things and one stick of RAM will not work at all now. I'm guessing that it must have been intermittent before as after removing it there is no longer any problem.
