Default Can't send/receive mail

When I open Windows Mail I get asked for a password.username. This started
yesterday. No matter what is put into the fields I get the error message
0x800ccc92.
Help, please!

That's not the complete error message. Please right-click on the error
message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Try your mail provider's new settings:
http://www.mchsi.com/help/read/publ...2/2002-01-28.01

Those instructions are for Outlook Express, but they should work
for Windows Mail also.

If that does not fix the problem, delete that mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate the account.
Note: Account logins can become corrupted by using a non-compatible
antivirus such as McAfee or Norton.

Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Gary-

I have uninstalled Norton, deleted the mail account & made a new one-all to
no avail. This began following yesterday's Windows update.

Do you still think it is a Norton issue? I have been using Windows Mail,
Vista & Norton 2007 for 6 months.

It isn't always a Norton issue, but as long as Norton or McAfee are
installed they can't be ruled out as the source of the problem, and
they often obscure the symptoms of any other problem that may be
coexisting simultaneously. So, step 1 is always a removal of the
non-compatible antivirus. Make sure you have rebooted the PC
since removal of Norton.

Also, if you have changed your mail settings to conform to
http://www.mchsi.com/help/read/publ...2/2002-01-28.01
that should have changed your error message somewhat. Please
post a copy of the latest error message.

Joanne, unless you have Hotmail Plus, the standard Hotmail account
has only web access. So it can't be used with a POP mail program
like Windows Mail. You have three options for email:

a) upgrade to Hotmail Plus (not free), or
b) use a POP email account from your ISP, or
c) upgrade to Windows Live Mail (free), which does accommodate
Hotmail accounts: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
