Hi,
I'm completely new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. I've inherited a website that requires editing. I have frontpage 2003 and when I'm on the website and click on FILE I then click on EDIT WITH MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE. Frontpage opens and I alter text on the page but when I go to save the changes I'm prompted for a user name and password which was given to me by my site hosting company. I enter the 12 character user name and the 15 character password exactly as supplied but I get no further. As you can see I'm a complete newcomer so forgive me if I'm going about it the wrong way. I have Smart FTP client on my PC but find it totally bewildering. Thanks. |

Congratulation! I notice a BIG changes now! But I like your original Home page because it has more info
and especially pricing. So your problem were finally fixed? Can you use SmartFTP to manage your web pages? --Rino "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3371BA57-5562-4AA1-847B-CD42FDC312EF@microsoft.com... > Thanks for getting back, it's www.highlandsreservevilla.co.uk > > "Rob Giordano (Crash)" wrote: > > > What is the URL to the website? > > > > > > > > -- > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > Rob Giordano > > Microsoft MVP Expression > > > > > > > > > > > > "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > > news:2B4E1321-5F84-425B-BF5C-E896A64E8867@microsoft.com... > > | Hi, > > | I'm completely new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. > > | I've inherited a website that requires editing. Ok your site has Frontpage Server Extensions installed.
You don't want to open your site for editing through IE. Open FP File | Open Web / Site enter http://www.highlandreservevilla.co.uk enter your un/pw when prompted now you have your website opened "live" on the server File | Publish Web / Site this time you will enter a location on your local hardrive...something like; C:\My Documents\My Webs\anynameyoulike (without an extension) this will publish your enter online website to a path you specify on your local hardrive, after that you will edit locally and publish TO the online server. hth -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rob Giordano Microsoft MVP Expression "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3371BA57-5562-4AA1-847B-CD42FDC312EF@microsoft.com... | Thanks for getting back, it's www.highlandsreservevilla.co.uk | | "Rob Giordano (Crash)" wrote: | | > What is the URL to the website? | > | > | > | > -- | > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | > Rob Giordano | > Microsoft MVP Expression | > | > | > | > | > | > "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message | > news:2B4E1321-5F84-425B-BF5C-E896A64E8867@microsoft.com... | > | Hi, | > | I'm completely new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. | > | I've inherited a website that requires editing. And DON'T use SmartFTP or any other third party ftp program to publish or
you will break the FPSE and have to have them repaired or reinstalled to publish via http:// method again. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rob Giordano Microsoft MVP Expression "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3371BA57-5562-4AA1-847B-CD42FDC312EF@microsoft.com... Thanks Rob for the information but to be brutally honest with you I dont
understand all you've come back with. I did as you said and ended up in FP with a screen split into two panes with a load of folders on one side and a few on the other side. Now you can see how green I really am at this!! Why should I not open my site for editing thru IE? Before I saw your replies I found that I could edit through IE but of course I ran into difficulties ( See thread "Lost all my hyperlinks!!") The latest is I have changed the page theme and it looks more like the original but I still dont know how to restore the links to the other pages. Thanks for everyones help so far, If I can get the links restored and the site back up running I think I'll leave well enough alone till I learn a whole lot more! Yea! Well now you have (or should have) your entire web site ON your local
hardrive. And, you can work with it there, change it, test it, then publish it back to the server. What you are seeing is what you SHOULD see, a web site and all it's related files/folders As for your hyperlinks; I assume that you may be talking about navigational buttons/links? Not sure, but if I had to venture a guess, you may have wacked them by working the way you were. Just go ahead and redo them in your local web and re-publish to the server. You are using a top shared border, were your navs up in there? If so, whatever is in a shared border will appear on all pages using shared borders. hth. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rob Giordano Microsoft MVP Expression "Mahedhurtz" <Mahedhurtz@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:81AED619-18CC-485D-9DAF-0BB9F89FF10B@microsoft.com... | Thanks Rob for the information but to be brutally honest with you I dont | understand all you've come back with.
