Default Dual Boot problem with Windows XP 64 and vista 32

I have searched the news groups, and I cannot find any answers to my
problem, so I am posting a new message.
I have a computer running windows XP64 an my C drive
I installed windows vista ultimate (not an upgrade edition) on a clean
empty drive.
here is the problem
1) start my computer without the Vista CD in the drive, it boots int
XP 64 without any options, there is no way to boot into vista
2) start my computer with the Vista CD in, it opens the new vista boot
loader with two options, if I choose the "older windows" option I get
an error about the ntloader". If I choose vista, it boots normally.

Note that my C drive is my primary boot drive (in the bios). If I try
to set the other drive to be a primary boot drive I get an error about
ntloader.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
w0den

Hi,

The other installation shouldn't even be using ntldr if it's a Vista
install. You can use VistaBootPro as mentioned by Mick, or a simple bcdedit
/add from and elevated command prompt. See instructions here:

The motherboard bios does not enumerate the hard disks correctly.
Otherwise, Vista setup would have placed its boot files on the XP64
disk, assuming both disks were connected during Vista installation.
And with the current disk configuration Windows XP would be booting
even with the Vista DVD in the optical drive.

Try copying hidden files boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com from the
XP64 disk to the Vista disk. Then set the motherboard bios to boot
from the Vista hard disk instead of the XP64 disk.

aren't boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com are for xp booting... Do
these have any relation to the new vista boot loader? The strangest
thing is that vista boot loader loads up if my vista disk is in the
optical drive... I find this very strange.

Based on the error you're seeing, the Vista boot manager is looking
for ntldr when you choose older Windows.

Your motherboard bios has a bug.
