I know this may sound like I'm being picky but sometimes correct phrasine is
necessary for better answers. The term unparitioned is not correct if you already have an operating system residing on the HD, as it's partitioned as One volume. if you wish to create another partition on the same volume, windows will not allow you to do this, as the volume is being used, you will need a third party piece of software like Partition magic, also be aware changing the operating system partition may cause you to have to do a repair install, as XP doesn't like the operating system partition to be changed once the OS has been installed, but then gain you may wind up just fine, be sure to make backups of your data just in case. don't forget your address book and favorites just as an example of things that need backup. Windows does not object to the size of the partition being changed while it is inactive, as long as the partition number remains unchanged (i.e. if Windows was on the first partition before the resize then its best to still keep it on the first partition). |

It takes a bit longer to boot than PM, and on some systems you have to dumb down the boot options (try 'lowmem', xvesa 800x600 video), but the price is right (free) and the GUI is quite similar to PM. |

Please read the following:
http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/partition.htm Your current configuration - XP Pro installed on the whole 60G disk has most likely been done on one primary NTFS partition. If you want to install another OS, say Linux, boot to a cd that has a partition manager type program on it. Before you do that make sure that you have defragged the XP install so that there isn't any important files in the higher part of the drive. After you boot to the cd, resize the C: partition to say 30G and save the changes and shutdown the system. Then get an install cd with Linux on it and when it asks for the type of install from a partition standpoint just say use the unpartitioned space. Also make sure the install is "dual boot" friendly in other words it doesn't damage the mbr or it replaces it properly with grub. You may have to tweak the boot manager before it all works properly. later.....
