Default No longer can scan lots of pages!

We use an HP scanner and usually scan through Adobe (full vers) but no
matter what software we scan through we can no longer scan lots of
pages - anything beyond 2 or 3 now just records as black, sometimes
part way down a page and then all pages following!
Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

What HP scanner, and is this manual feed or with a document feeder?

Barry many thanks.
It's doc feeder with HP 5500.
It cannot be a hardware problem as it still works like a dream when
hooked into other PC's during extensive testing. The PC on which it
is connected day to day has done thousands of pages scanning and I
wondered if perhaps there is a temp library or something created which
is now full, or similar, but we can't find anything like that. ?
regards Wendy
